Have you received a mystery USB stick through the post or found one lying in the car park?
You should not plug it in.
Unknown USB devices can pose a serious risk to your data & device.
USB drives can be preloaded with malicious software & could automatically open when plugged into your PC.
They could contain ransomware, keyloggers or spyware.
To steal sensitive data or to disrupt your system.
Even more alarming is the USB killer.
These are specially modified USB devices.
That contain voltage converters.
It converts the 5V that your USB port provides to hundreds of volts.
Once this is reached it sends the power down the data lines of your USB port.
Data lines are meant to use 0 to approx. 3.3V.
So you can imagine the damage that these could cause.
At minimum your USB port will stop working.
At worst it could fry your entire PC.
Attackers often rely on curiosity or goodwill.
A USB stick left in a public place might be part of a ploy to trick someone into unknowingly compromising a secure system.
So if you find an unknown USB device, hand it to your IT support for investigation.
DO NOT plug it into your device.
Even if it appears to be brand new or sealed.
If you have already plugged one in.
Remove it immediately & contact your IT support.
